History of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has long been practised particularly in India as part of their daily family life. Based on the ancient Ayurvedic (meaning ‘the science of life’) healing system; it combines natural therapies with mind, body & spirit. In Europe, the therapy has been adapted, incorporating modern Western techniques alongside the traditional Indian techniques.

Indian women found that by massaging oil into the scalp it kept their hair in good condition and shiny. This was especially beneficial due to the nature of their climate being so hot, which tended to make their hair very dry.

The skill of Indian Head Massage is handed down from generation to generation and babies as young as new borns have their heads massaged daily by their mother. This ritual continues into adulthood and even expectant mothers receive a head massage up until they give birth.
