Below, our Holistic Therapist & Reiki Practitioner Nicola tells us more about reflexology, the ancient practice of gently pressing on certain parts of the foot to produce therapeutic effects elsewhere in the body.
This relaxing complementary therapy has been recognised for its benefits for a lot longer than you might realise. There is evidence that reflexology was developed as early as 4,000 BCE in China, where its use remains widespread. Foot therapies were also practised by Native American tribes and even Ancient Egyptians.
Reflexology is based on the principle that our bodies are mapped by channels of energy, or “qi”. When the flow of that energy is blocked in some way, we can feel pain or generally unwell. Although your feet are massaged to relax you before we start, the technique focuses on applying pressure to a range of particular points. Your body is “read” via your feet through crunchiness or soreness that can indicate a possible issue with the related organ or body part before pressure is applied to trigger the body’s healing processes.
The potential benefits of Reflexology include:
- Can relieve and prevent headaches, chronic pain, constipation, digestion and insomnia
- Can assist with the rebalancing of the bodies hormones and menstrual disorders.
- Can help with stress-related conditions, including depression, anxiety, IBS & migraine.
- Can help bring your body and mind back into a state of homoeostasis, boosting your general sense of well-being.
